For what it's worth, I think there's a collective understanding that who we were there isn't exactly who we are here. More so for some than others, but at any rate, anybody with common sense won't cement that image of you in their mind.

The only way to really fix it is to let yourself be seen being who you actually are.

For the record, I'm pretty sure I like that guy.

( You know, based on what he's seen so far. Just in case that'll coax a few more doors open. )

( It matches up so closely with the doubt that started growing after his conversation with Kyna, he actually has to take a minute to respond.

There's a lot going on, a lot he's trying to work through about that, but right now isn't the time to get caught up in it.

As long as those parts of the picture are real, the rest of it's just color

I don't know, that did a pretty fucking good job

( Because he can't think of anything that tops it in terms of raw, open honesty in recent memory. Or, at least, recent memory in this life.

It comes with a tight grip to his chest, and the ridiculous feeling that he just passed some kind of test he wasn't aware he was taking.

I know

( He does. He thinks he does. He's not sure what exactly Nate's trying for, whether it's to be like they -- kind of like they were in another life, or to just be okay again, or if he's trying to figure out where on that spectrum they ought to land. In the end, the direction doesn't matter as much as the effort right now.

Maybe. Somebody ask Lance.

Anyway, as uncomfortable as it is to admit -- let alone put into actual text:

I'll save you two if you don't make me run in the morning.

( A relatively safe call-back, but also a decent reminder that he cared about Nate before all this. Just in case that matters. )
