[He wants to be defensive. He feels defensive, because no one else knows the circumstances, the full story. No one has the all-important context, and Hell, he didn’t even get to explain that part to Elena before things went so far south he might as well be sticking a flag into Antarctica.

He already knows he shouldn’t have kept it from her. He shouldn’t have lied, even if it felt like it was for her own safety. Another excuse, maybe. Nate isn’t known for looking too far into his own decisions. Better to take his licks and sit on the internal question as to whether or not this brush with divorce might lead to real papers.
