[ There's something delightfully accusatory in that question and Nate smiles in spite of himself. Usually people will accompany a statement like the one he made with an addendum - I was an Army brat, or something similar - but Nate cannot claim such humble and provincial origins as being shifted around with frequency due to Uncle Sam's ever-changing whims. ]
We traveled a lot. I was a kid, and my older brother picked up odd jobs where he could.
[ Which is as personal as he's willing to get without venturing into territory that some have derisively called Dickensian. ]
[ Parentless and complicated. Nate doesn't have too many reservations giving the plainest of facts about his childhood, but the intimate details are better left for those he knows won't judge him, and he isn't entirely sure where he stands with Stephen yet outside of a general working respect. ]
Nebraska, really? Great Plains must've driven you nuts.
[ Middle America isn't a place Nate has ever actually visited much - if at all - and part of that is just due to the lack of historicity. ]
I was born in Boston, which is about as much a polar opposite as possible. And the accents-
[ He was marooned on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean before he came here, so being trapped in a future where everyone he knows is probably gone is something of a lateral move. Nate can feel himself drifting into that distracted listlessness again and fights it with a thin excuse for a smile. ]
Yeah.
[ He's fucking lonely. Judging by their current surroundings it seems like Stephen knows the sensation intimately. Nate lifts his beaker in a mock toast. ]
[ There's a shift. Stephen quiets, seeking out evidence, and finds it in the raise of a makeshift glass and the unconvincing tilt of a smile. ]
... To coping mechanisms.
[ Three small words and a beaker raised in turn. A greater concession to struggle than any other he's given in— nine months.
He drains his glass. Wonders if he's ever put any real thought into what his coping mechanisms are, the liquor burning a path down his throat aside. But of course, he's standing in the basement of the product of them: a business pulled out of nowhere, a "home" without personality or comfort, all of his resources poured back into the bar so that others might be better supported. No time to dwell. Less room for guilt.
The empty glass in his hand and the company it's shared with is an admission of its own, one that takes him slightly by surprise. It shows the first sprouting shoots of a willingness, however infrequent, to allow himself a little break for air. ]
And to limitless supply.
[ Which is to say he's pouring himself another, bottle lifted in question. Top up? ]

Hey there. We haven't officially met, but I'm one of the new Morningstar agents who relocated from New Oslo, and I've seen you around. Morningstar and the Displaced haven't always had the easiest relationship, but I know a lot of you are doing the best you can here. You seem like a good person to reach out to, so I thought I'd share some of the digging I've done.
Gaby told me what happened with those kidnappings recently, and mentioned there was a mercenary group involved. Sending this at all is dangerous, as you can imagine, so I'm spreading the information out among a few of you. You might have to piece things together, but it's the best method I've got right now.
It turns out there are more mercenary groups running around than the one you guys had a run in with. From what I've found, they get a lot of their backing from large corporationsβsome seriously heavy hitters. Unfortunately for us, that makes things even more dicey. There are powerful people invested in keeping these groups under the radar.
[ This is...unexpected, but perhaps it shouldn't be. he's been understandably wary of Morningstar thus far but the intel is something worth looking into on top of his other current interests. ]
hey.
can you give me an approximation of other displaced who are looking into this?
i've assumed from the get go that whoever was hiring the mercs was well connected and well funded. being relatively new here i'm not versed on the biggest power players.
kind of a stupid question, but: who stands to profit the most from maintaining the status quo by harnessing what we can do? what kind of millionaires and billionaires are we talking about?
[ With someone he actually knows Nate has fewer qualms about greeting Drake with a hand clapped to his shoulder, knowing the barrier of clothing will protect them both from unnecessary (or unwanted) empathetic sharing. In times like these, people should be entitled to their own thoughts and emotions. ]
Hey.
[ He takes the seat next to him, finding it difficult to tear his gaze away. ]
[ It is one of the nicer buildings in town, similar to Daisy's, something upscale and gleaming and minimalist in design. Unlike a lot of the boisterous downtown, teeming with life, it feels almost cold by comparison, but he supposes that's appropriate for someone like Godric.
Dracula's castle.
He manages to look convincingly decent to the doorman and makes his way up to the suite in question, checking his messages one more time before knocking. ]
[ The contact gets Nate a broad, easy smile from Drake. He's a touchy guy, is used to shoulder clapping or hugging his friends at the least so New Amsterdam has been... a challenge. Lonely, and isolating even when it's not. And that's without considering his own personal weirdness. ]
It really is. You managed to make any friends in the time you've been here?
I'd say the big corporations here in New Amsterdam are decent places to start. Pulsar, Vyonation, Giles Bell. This obviously goes beyond one city, though, and Riverstone is always a name to keep in the back of your mind.
As for who, I don't want to be too obvious here, but there's at least one other person who also works at Red Wings.
you can understand why i'm hesitant to give you details about mercenary organizations that are keeping tabs on us if your intention is to join up, right?
not to go all regional manager on you and please don't take this question personally but like what makes you think you can effectively infiltrate a mercenary group?
